Special Issue on Mobile Multimedia Big Data Communication Systems (MBDC)

The ubiquitous adoption of highly capable mobile devices combined with the popularity of social networks has generated enormous volumes of multimedia content and heralded a new era of ‘multimedia big data’. As this new era dawns, we face many exciting opportunities and difficult challenges, each with the potential to deeply impact on how we work and live. Current sources of multimedia data such as the mobile Internet, social networking platforms, wireless multimedia sensor networks and broadcast services will expand to include many new sources derived from Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. This explosive growth in multimedia usage requires new scalable, elastic and responsive cloud-based services, not only for storage but also computational services such as transcoding, content description/tagging, organization, searching and semantic-based retrieval.

There are three key aspects to promoting multimedia big data technologies to practices, namely transport, storage and processing. Amongst the most challenging areas is that of meeting the Quality of Experience (QoE) / Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of mobile multimedia big data services. This challenge is becoming more and more difficult due to of the ever-evolving mobile multimedia devices, limitations on bandwidth in mobile environments, the need to conserve energy (battery life), user mobility and dynamically changing wireless connections. Solving the many challenges of multimedia big data requires new approaches and architectures across the four key areas.

This special issue focuses on recent advances in storage, services, transmission and processing approaches of mobile multimedia big data. Original, unpublished contributions and invited articles, reflecting various aspects of mobile multimedia big data are encouraged. The topics of interest for the special issue include, but are not limited to:

Architecture of mobile multimedia big data broadcasting services
Mobile multimedia service scheduling
Big data aware cooperative multimedia communication and broadcasting
Enhanced QoS/QoE for mobile multimedia big data
Multimedia big data content broadcasting on mobile devices
Distributed storage and distribution architecture of mobile multimedia big data
Mobile media processing and compression protocol
Storage approach of mobile multimedia big data streaming
Mobile multimedia ad hoc, sensor networks and Internet of Things
Processing platform and programming model for mobile big data
Protocols and algorithms for mobile multimedia big data service
Security policy and enforcement issues for mobile multimedia big data service

Prospective authors are invited to submit original, high quality papers that have not appeared, nor are under considerations, in any other journals. Submissions should follow the author guidelines set out by Journal of Communications and prepared by the journal template, which is available at http://www.jocm.us/ (at the left bottom on the main page). Manuscripts should be submitted electronically (both .doc and .pdf files) to the corresponding Guest Editor, Dr. Kaijian Xia, xiakaijian@163.com; or to the journal via jcm@etpub.com, but with mark “MBDC”. Should you have further questions, please contact the corresponding Guest Editor, Dr. Kaijian Xia.
