Abstract—This paper examines mobility events, and particularlyhandovers in an overlay environment, where HierarchicalMobile IP is operating over MPLS. The overlayoperation is examined in detail under two scenarios and acomprehensive explanation of the operation of intra- andinter-cell handovers is presented. Furthermore, it improveson existing methods of MIP-MPLS interworking first bydefining a simple framework based on Hierarchical MobileIPv6 (HMIPv6), and second by outlining the relevant protocoldesign aspects.
